The process

An online application, filed by the employer

1. Approval in principle

Economic Development Board · NELS platform
  1. The employer, registered on the platform, files the application
  2. Employment contract, job description, degrees, CV, passport and photo
  3. Approval in principle issued

2. Permit issued

After approval in principle
  1. Medical certificate and reports under 6 months old
  2. Marriage certificate where relevant, copies of previous visas and permits
  3. Payment of fees and permit issued; family files with the Passport and Immigration Office

Good to know — the approval in principle is not a visa. While the file is processed, the employee enters Mauritius on a business visa and the family on a tourist visa.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What salary is needed for a work permit in Mauritius?

For a Professional Occupation Permit, a monthly basic salary of at least MUR 50,000, whatever the sector. Holders of a current permit issued under the former MUR 30,000 threshold get one renewal on that criterion.

Can we employ someone in Mauritius without a company there?

Yes. DI-Africa (Mauritius) becomes the legal employer (Employer of Record), files the permit application and runs payroll; you keep direction of the work. It is the typical case of a client sending two or three people for a few months.

Can the employee work while the file is processed?

No. They can enter on a business visa while the file is processed, but only start work once the permit is issued.

Can the family come along?

Yes. The spouse, unmarried children and dependent parents obtain a residence permit for the same term as the employee's permit.

How much does a permit cost?

Official fees depend on the category and term of the permit, plus a fee per dependant. Our quote itemises official fees and DI-Africa fees.
